How to fill your daily life with more of God's word

I shared an idea on my Facebook page recently from Lysa Terkeurst about picking a bible verse and finding a way to make it visible to you during your day. I loved her idea and it got me thinking about how to find practical ways to get encouragement from scripture that don’t require you to sit with your bible for hours at a time.

Here’s my post from Facebook:

Don’t misunderstand though, I am not saying that you should give up your daily quiet times in favor of this method. However,  I think it can be a great way to be consistently reminded of God’s truth in a practical way that does not require a lot of extra time.

If you display verses in places you will see them often, you can quickly take a moment to read and meditate on it as you go about your daily tasks. So here are some simple ways to help you saturate your life with God’s word without using more of your time.

Choose Some Verses

First, you may need to spend a little time finding some verses that speak to where you currently are in your walk with God and your life. If you are struggling with peace for example search that word on bible gateway or in the back of your bible and see what comes up. Copy the references in a notebook, excel spreadsheet or word document so you can refer back to it.

One word of caution. Please make sure you are understanding the verses you use correctly. It can be easy to take some verses out of context and therefore completely lose the intended meaning. When choosing a verse to use in this way just be aware you know what it actually means.

Still not sure what verses to use? In a future post I will list some good verses that may be helpful for you. For now, here’s some ideas to get you thinking about how you can start filling your life with more of the truth in God’s word.

How to See More Scripture Throughout Your Day

Post it Notes

As Lysa mentioned in her facebook post, you can just use simple post it notes. A friend of mine loves post it notes and she puts them up all over the place. She writes encouraging notes and reminders on them and puts them where she knows they will be seen. This could be a good and simple way to put a verse up on your wall or fridge or anywhere else you will see it often.

Computer Wallpaper

If you work on your computer a lot, chances are you will see the background of your screen often. Find a nice looking desktop image with a verse and use it as your background. I find mine on crosscards.com. They’ve got a lot of gorgeous images and they are free to use!

Here’s my current desktop background (which I will be changing soon for the new month):

August 2013 - Psalm 105-4 NIV Desktop Calendar- Free August Wallpaper

To get your own desktop wallpaper, go to the Crosscards website and find where it says wallpaper categories on the left sidebar. Once you find something you like pick the size of your screen. When the image loads, right-click and select set as desktop background. There you go! Wasn’t that easy?

Frame it

Got a particular verse that you really like? Make a cute printable and put it in a frame. Then hang it somewhere visible. If you aren’t too crafty, you can find lots of printables online or even find something in your Christian bookstore or from dayspring.com (affiliate link). Dayspring has lots of inspirational decor and gifts that will not only encourage you with the words but put a smile on your face when you see it.

Memory verse cards

Memory verse cards are simple to make. All you have to do is take some index cards, punch a hole in the corner and attach them with a binder ring or ribbon. These are great because they are very portable so you can take them with you just about anywhere you go. It is also nice to have the blank cards so you can keep adding verses to it. Here’s what mine look like.

my verse cards

As you will see in the above picture I have a cover card to give it a nicer more polished look. I created this card the same size as the index cards and printed it on photo paper so it has as smooth shiny finish. If you want to create your own verse pack like this check out my free printables (coming soon).

I created a variety of designs that I will soon be offering as free printables. So be on the lookout for that coming next week!

You can also get some cute printable sets of cards with verses already printed on them. These would be nice to if you want a set of verses on a particular topic. I hope to create some sets of my own to offer you in the future. The first one I want to make will be on the topic of joy. Right now if you like Young Wife’s Guide on  Facebook  you can download five sets for free (for a limited time). See the screen shot below to show you where to get the printables.

If you are looking for something else, just do a Google or Pinterest search and some will come up. There are even Etsy shops that sell sets of verse cards.

These are just a few simple ways to get more of God’s word into your life.

I hope you got a lot of great ideas about how to see more scriptures throughout your day. I will be doing another post soon with some verses that would be useful for you to use either in your bible memory verse packs or just to write and put somewhere that will encourage you. Also I will be posting the free printable cards for your own verse packs next week!

In what ways do you get God’s word into your life besides specifically setting time to read your bible?

What are some verses that you like to go to often for encouragement?

  1. Love this post!! I have never heard of crosscards and plan to use them in the future. Love these great ideas.

  2. I need to do a bit more of this. I’ve been using Crosscards for quite some time now, maybe about 8 years. I have a few friends who are very religious and I send them cards through them all the time. They have the best cards.

  5. Great idea! I wonder if I can set an alarm on my phone and title it the scripture? That way, when the alarm went off, I would see the scripture right then!

  6. LOVE this post, Ashley! It was hard for me to choose a verse to memorize, but I remembered about a small chapter in Psalms that I meant to memorize a long time ago and never did. It’s Psalm 121. I’m writing it out and taping it above my kitchen sink right now, so I’ll see it when I’m doing the dishes. Thank you for this challenge!

  8. This is a really neat idea. I put the words “Choose gratitude” on my teeny tiny ancient flip phone so that I would remember to be grateful to God whenever I saw it. This would help even more. Just a little reminder of who we are and who He is. Thanks for the post!
